Austin’s Fresh Air Oasis: A Retreat Rewind

Discovering Inspiration and Community at The Fresh Air Retreat in Austin, Texas

Last month, I had the incredible privilege of being invited to participate in The Fresh Air Retreat, an exclusive gathering for food bloggers. This immersive experience in Austin, Texas, was not just a trip; it was a profound journey of connection, learning, and culinary delight that I’m thrilled to recap for you.

The Fresh Air Retreat: A Unique Hub for Food Bloggers

The Fresh Air Retreat is the brainchild of two visionary food blogging titans: Liz Della Croce from The Lemon Bowl and Lauren Grier from The Curious Plate. Their brilliant concept offers food bloggers a vital opportunity to step away from their individual kitchens and connect for three enriching days. It’s a space dedicated to in-depth conversations about the evolving business of food blogging, fostering peer-to-peer learning, and building lasting relationships within a supportive community. As a food blogger, the journey can often feel solitary, even with the fantastic team of contractors I work with. Therefore, being extended an invitation to this esteemed gathering was an immense honor, and I eagerly seized the chance to collaborate and converse with fellow passionate women in the industry.

An Unforgettable Austin Experience: Luxury, Learning, and Laughter

This particular retreat was hosted in the vibrant and culinary-rich city of Austin, Texas, a location that perfectly complemented the dynamic energy of our group. Our accommodations were nothing short of spectacular: a beautiful, spacious rental home nestled conveniently close to the bustling downtown area. Every single aspect of this retreat was meticulously planned and executed, leaving no detail overlooked. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was an experience designed to inspire and indulge.

Adding an extraordinary dimension to our stay was Executive Chef Trimell Hawkins, who resided in the house with us. Chef Hawkins consistently amazed us with his creativity, crafting elaborate five-course meals that were truly works of art – culinary masterpieces I find myself still dreaming about! His inventive approach to food, combined with his engaging stories and warm personality, made him an invaluable and cherished addition to our week. His presence elevated every meal into a memorable event, turning mere dining into an exquisite sensory experience. The level of pampering and exceptional gastronomy felt genuinely spoiling, highlighting the retreat’s commitment to unparalleled quality.

Documenting every candid moment and beautifully styled dish was the talented photographer, Amanda Kamppinen, known on Instagram as @amanda.kamppinen. Her artistry is evident in all the stunning photographs I’m sharing throughout this recap post, perfectly capturing the essence and joy of our time together.

Partnerships with Purpose: Brands That Inspire

A significant highlight of The Fresh Air Retreat was the opportunity to engage with several prominent brands that partner with food bloggers. While I was already familiar with many of these companies and their products, the retreat provided a unique platform to delve deeper into their histories, understand their core missions, and discover what truly distinguishes them in their respective fields. This intimate exposure offered invaluable insights into the values driving these brands.

Dave’s Killer Bread: A Story of Second Chances and Organic Excellence

Among the brands we connected with, Dave’s Killer Bread stood out as a personal favorite, a staple in my household every week. We began each morning in Austin with their incredibly delicious organic breads, a perfect start to our busy days. My go-to choice, the cinnamon raisin bread, always brought a smile to my face. Beyond the breakfast table, Dave’s Killer Bread brought an unexpected element of fun to the retreat by leading us in an energetic 90s-themed workout class. Decked out in our best 90s inspired outfits, we laughed, sweated, and embraced the nostalgic fun!

What truly resonated with me, however, was learning the powerful story behind the brand. The journey of its founder, Dave, who spent 15 years in prison, is nothing short of inspiring. Upon his release, he channeled his energy and determination into his family’s bakery, transforming it into America’s #1 organic bread company. This remarkable achievement, which comes as no surprise given my family’s unwavering love for their bread, is underscored by their profound commitment to social good. Dave’s Killer Bread is a proud Second Chance Employer, a philosophy that deeply moved me. They believe wholeheartedly in the transformative power of giving individuals who are eager to rebuild their lives a second chance, committing to hiring the most qualified person for the job, regardless of their past criminal history. This forward-thinking perspective is incredibly refreshing and inspiring, demonstrating how a company can achieve immense success while actively striving to make a positive impact on the world.

Envy Apples: The Future of Freshness

Apples are a constant presence in my home, yet I had never given much thought to the subtle differences between varieties until I encountered Envy Apples. These apples genuinely piqued my curiosity, primarily due to their remarkable resistance to browning. I had numerous questions about this intriguing quality and discovered that Envy Apples are the result of natural plant-breeding methods, a delightful cross between Braeburn and Royal Gala apples. The practical advantages of an apple that maintains its pristine white flesh longer are immense. Imagine packing apple slices for your children’s school lunches without the worry of them turning unappetizingly brown by lunchtime. Furthermore, for culinary enthusiasts, these apples are a game-changer for fresh dishes like salads, ensuring your creations remain vibrant and visually appealing for extended periods. This innovation truly offers both convenience and aesthetic benefits, making Envy Apples a superior choice for any kitchen.

Flor de Caña: Sustainable Sips and Rich Heritage

While I wouldn’t claim to be a rum connoisseur, I certainly appreciate a well-crafted rum cocktail when the opportunity arises. Therefore, I was particularly delighted to learn we would be treated to a special tasting experience courtesy of Flor de Caña. Luis Baez, our engaging guide, led us through a fascinating tasting session, sharing the brand’s rich history and guiding us in the art of crafting an exquisite espresso martini. As a devoted fan of espresso martinis, this was an absolute treat! Luis’s charm and storytelling ability were captivating; I could have listened to him all day. Beyond the delicious sips, Flor de Caña holds the prestigious distinction of being the world’s first spirit to be certified carbon neutral and fair trade. This family-owned company, with roots dating back to 1890, exemplifies a deep commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. Their exceptional rum contains zero sugar and no artificial ingredients, delivering a pure and incredibly tasty experience. For anyone looking to explore a new rum and eager to support a brand dedicated to environmental and social responsibility, Flor de Caña is an unparalleled choice. It has undoubtedly become my preferred rum for future purchases.

Zwilling: Mastering the Art of Kitchen Essentials

Many of you are likely already familiar with the esteemed brand Zwilling. In my kitchen, their knives are simply the best, and I have an extensive collection of their high-quality Staub cookware. Zwilling products are integral to my daily culinary endeavors, so I was incredibly excited to see them included in the retreat’s lineup. Executive Chef Bernard Janssen from Zwilling joined us to lead an immersive knife skills class. We all felt a healthy pressure to perform well, but more importantly, I walked away with invaluable new methods and insightful tips that have already enhanced my kitchen efficiency. A prime example is my newfound appreciation for the fillet knife. I had always perceived it as solely for fish preparation, but Chef Janssen demonstrated its remarkable flexibility, making it incredibly effective for tasks like effortlessly removing the skin from tomatoes or peeling an orange with precision. This revelation was truly eye-opening and immediately prompted me to add a fillet knife to my collection.

A Culinary Grand Finale: Dining Under the Stars at Ciclo

Our final night in Austin culminated in what I can confidently describe as one of the top three meals of my entire life. It was an experience so exceptional that I simply must share every detail. Our evening began at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel, where we were greeted with a unique and utterly charming setup: the Teardrop Trailer, a delightful champagne Airstream bar. The sheer cuteness of this venue was undeniable! We started our experience with a celebratory pop of a champagne cork – a spectacular launch I’ve rarely witnessed – followed by relaxed conversation and refreshing drinks, setting a perfectly tranquil tone before we were escorted to our dinner reservations.

Dinner was served at Ciclo, the Four Seasons’ acclaimed restaurant, conveniently just steps away from our champagne aperitif. We had the pleasure of dining outdoors, a truly magical experience under the Austin stars, especially with the evening weather being absolutely perfect. I chose the exquisite filet, which was perfectly prepared, but the true feast was the seemingly endless array of appetizers and desserts – I felt like I sampled 101 different culinary delights! The food flowed generously, and as someone with a bottomless pit for good food, I savored every single bite. If you ever find yourself in Austin, I cannot recommend Ciclo highly enough. This meal was not merely dinner; it was a truly one-of-a-kind culinary journey, and I am already planning my return.

Beyond the Plate: Business Insights and Renewed Focus for Food Bloggers

Leaving Austin, my mind was brimming with an abundance of new knowledge, innovative ideas, and profound gratitude. While the exquisite food I was fortunate to enjoy undoubtedly provided ample recipe inspiration – a significant aspect of my job – my two most substantial takeaways from The Fresh Air Retreat delve into the often-unseen facets of the food blogging business.

For many of you, my work primarily revolves around the delectable recipes and culinary creations I share. However, behind every mouth-watering dish, there’s an intricate web of activities that consume the majority of my time and effort. This includes diligent recipe research and development, strategic search engine optimization (SEO), engaging content writing, meticulous social media management, the coordination of various contractors, ongoing website design, development, and support, high-quality photography, captivating video creation, precise accounting, and a myriad of other essential tasks. These are the critical, behind-the-scenes drivers that truly propel the success and reach of my food blogging business. While I can create delicious dishes all day long, without strong performance in these technical and strategic areas, my recipes would simply not reach the audience they deserve.

Understanding this intricate balance, what I most value about this retreat experience is the wealth of actionable ideas and fresh perspectives for my business that I returned with. I immediately began implementing some of these strategies, and the profound appreciation I gained for my peers and their invaluable friendships has been deeply enriching. I am now making more strategic, data-driven decisions regarding my approach to SEO and overall website development, with exciting changes slated for release this Spring. Furthermore, I am revisiting and refining my Pinterest strategy to maximize its potential. These strategic shifts fill me with immense excitement, and my greatest hope is that you, my cherished readers, devoted recipe-makers, and biggest encouragers, will soon reap the benefits of these improvements through an even better and more accessible culinary experience on my platform.
